Name of organization:

HVTO (Homestay Volunteer Teachers Organization)
Project Name & donation amount awarded:

-Clean Water Project (Building Water Pumps)
-14500 USD
Award Date:

18 December 2009
Give a few bullet points on the overall activities of the project during the past year including, where applicable, the use of volunteers, populations served, location and major achievements.

  • A large majority of Cambodian people live in rural areas. The villagers lack bare necessities, especially clean drinking water. Poor drinking Water and sanitation are the main causes of high rates of infant mortality. Having access to clean water and an understanding of hygiene is crucial to helping people to improve living conditions.
  • HVTO is appealing to all charitable people who can help to provide a clean water pump and water filter to our Cambodian communities. HVTO co-ordinates and makes sure the water pumps are delivered to the neediest families in the rural areas.

  • In June 2009, the Founder guided Mr. Leland Lim of Goldman Sachs’ and his family while he was visiting Cambodia. He was very interested in HVTO’s Clean Water Project, and he gave us financial support to build a water pump. Mr. Lim told that he would recommend that Goldman Sachs take a look at our projects.
  • Having been informed by Mr. Leland Lim, Goldman Sachs Charitable Contribution Committee was interested in our projects. Mr. Timothy Greaton from GS contacted and sent us the application form to be completed for the Grant Request.
  • Mr. Didac Boadas, our volunteer from Spain; Mr. Robin Walker from Canada and HVTO ‘s members prepared the application forms to request the Grant for Clean Water Project to build and install 100 water pumps throughout the community.
  • In December 2009, we received great news from Goldman Sachs that they had decided to approve our request of funding some 14,500 USD.

  • After received funding, HVTO (local members and foreign volunteers from USA and Australia)  worked together with Sreth & Sophy Community Committee to search for the neediest families in the villages ( from December 2009 to January 2010)

  • After our research, we saw that, it was not difficult to build water pumps in these villages. The pump maker accepted the same cost that HVTO offered. It made no difference to the cost between HVTO buying materials as mentioned in application form, and the local pump maker being responsible to do everything for 130 USD for one ready-to-use water pump with warranty of one year. This way HVTO could save money from Admin budget and finally we could build other 7 water pumps on top of 100 as planned. It has been done successfully with appreciation and recognition from communities and local authority that the pump maker did a good job.

Outline the objectives and goals of the donation
a)      What were your objectives and to what extent were they achieved?

Give support to rural Cambodian areas (Sophy and Sreth) to ensure health and development that let them achieve a self sustainable community in the long term. With this donation, we could build 107 pumps in total. Specifically 42 water pumps were built in Sreth village and 65 in Sophy. This means 107 families are using Pumps directly and other 150 families are sharing all these pumps also. Many families are located far away from water sources that can not share with other families so we decided to build a pump for each family.

b)      How have they impacted the project?

These107 pumps are now installed and well documented in Sophy and Sreth villages and they enable 2.100 people to have clean water systems. This represents an increase of 600% . Before, only 8% of our community has clean water, with 107 water pumps, 53% of the community has easy access to clean water.

c)      Were any objectives changed?

Yes, it changed. Our objective was to build these pumps to be shared by as many families as possible but for some pumps can not be shared

d)      If applicable, what were the reasons for not reaching the objective(s)?

Some families located far away from each other and they do have difficulty to get clean water. So that is why we decided to build each family a pump.

How important was this donation in the context of your overall activities?

By seeing our people in the whole community (Sophy & Sreth) having easy access to clean water for daily lives and improving their living conditions, these are all important things to our NGO to be able to help them with this way.

Will the project continue next year?  If so, what plans do you have and how will they be funded?
Yes, we will continue to help other villages. There are many families in the rural areas who do need clean drinking water. Founder and volunteers are all tour guides and we are trying to explain to the tourists about this project and occasionally we meet the donors who will help donate one water pump. So it would great if Goldman Sachs would fund another 100 water pumps for two other villages.

We welcome your feedback on the process of our corporate giving program. How do our requirements rate in comparison with other funding programs you have applied for?

For HVTO, Goldman Sachs has a very concise and specific requirements and this is the only way for transparency in funding a project. So far HVTO has only two important donor-companies namely, Tomando Conciencia from Spain who donated 20 water pumps in 2008 and Goldman Sachs who donated 107 pumps in 2010. They came and inspected all our work on site and they were very proud. This is the best way of showcase what we have done.
